Fic: Trial By Marriage (R) 2/?
Title: Trial By Marriage
Rating: R
Word Count: 1,020
Spoilers: Buffy - through Chosen. SPN - through all aired episodes so far.
Summary: Buffy and Dean have disliked each other from the first time they met. But with their situation, feelings are bound to change.
Disclaimer: I do not own anything associated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Supernatural. They belong to Joss Whedon and Eric Kripke.
Notes: This was written for tamingthemuse (prompt: Clamp). And really, I was going to update DILI but this wouldn't leave me alone. I got the idea after rereading Separate Beds by LaVyrle Spencer (it's an old favorite of mine) and so the main idea should be credited to her. I'm just trying to put my own spin on it. (And points to the person who realizes which line of Dean's is a pure shout out to a SPN ep.)

Dean stared at Buffy and let out another breath. He tilted his head back and clamped down on the panic he felt rapidly building in his chest.

A baby. A tiny little person who was going to be a combination of him and Buffy.

Jesus, the world was doomed.

“Shit,” he breathed. Buffy nodded in agreement.

“Exactly,” was all she said.

He was silent for another moment before looking up. “What are we going to do?”

Buffy stared at him. “We? What do you mean what are we going to do?”

“Yeah, we. It’s my baby too.” When Buffy continued to stare at him, he shifted. “What?”

“You want to be a part of this?” She tilted her head. “Of whatever decision I make? You want a say?”

“Yeah, so?”

She smiled. “Not many guys would want to, Dean. Especially when the baby is the result of a drunken one night stand with someone they don’t even really like.”

“I never said I didn’t like you.”

“You just said a few minutes ago that your favorite thing to do is annoy me.”

Dean opened his mouth to deny it and then stopped. “That doesn’t mean I don’t like you.”

She snorted. “One thing that you and I can guarantee, Dean, is we tell each other the truth.”

He nodded in acknowledgement. “Okay. So I don’t always like you. But you’re not so bad sometimes.”

“Gee, thanks,” she said. “My heart’s all aflutter.”

He grinned. “Part of my charm.”

For the first time since the start of the conversation, Buffy laughed. “I’m sure.”

“Okay, so there seems to be a new clan of demons in the area that are being very, well, violent and pushy about taking over the town,” Willow said, looking at everyone sitting around the table.

Xander’s lips twitched. “And from there, I bet they want to take over the world.”

“It’s what they do every night,” Buffy said, understanding where he was going with that train of thought. Xander nodded and pointed at her.

“Exactly, Brain.”

“Thank you, Pinky.”

Willow looked at the two of them, obviously fighting not to smile. “Now that the demons’ plans have been explained, why don’t we move on?”

“Yes, that would be a change of pace,” Giles muttered. Buffy smiled brightly at him.

“I think what Willow was trying to say,” Sam interrupted, “was that there are a few things that the demons need before they can do anything.” Willow nodded in agreement and Sam turned to look at the rest of them. “Which means that we’re going to have to go out in teams tonight.”

Dean smirked. “Why, Sammy, you know how I get when you start taking charge.” His smirk turned into a grin when Buffy snickered.

Sam rolled his eyes and continued. “We figured that each team will have a Slayer since it gives us a bit of an advantage.” Off of everyone’s nod, he added, “Faith, you’re taking the east, Buffy’s taking the west—“

“No way,” Dean interrupted. He paused when everyone turned to look at him. All of them looked curious except for Buffy who was giving him a look that said to shut up now.

“Why not?” Giles asked.

“I...she...because she’s...” He glanced at Buffy and then back at Giles. “Because she’s sucked lately.” Even as he said it, he knew that it was one of the worst excuses. Buffy had been on top of her game lately. Hell, she’d kicked the shit out of a nest of vampires two nights ago and played a huge part in stopping another apocalypse last week.

Buffy stood, stopping Giles before he could say anything. “I need to talk to Dean,” she said. “Excuse us for a minute.” She gave Dean a pointed look before walking out of the room.

He let out a sigh and rolled his eyes at the others before following her out. He moved into the room that she’d gone into, shutting the door behind him.

“What was that?” she asked the second she heard the click of the lock.

“I couldn’t help it, okay? It just slipped out.”

She let out a breath. “We agreed not to say anything until we had decided what to do,” she reminded him.

“I know,” Dean snapped. “Jesus, I just found out you’re pregnant right before that little meeting so excuse me for making a mistake.”

Buffy narrowed her eyes at him. “Don’t give me that. I found out right before you did, remember? And you don’t see me blurting that I can’t patrol and using lame excuses.”

“We’re not talking about a routine patrol here, Summers. We’re talking about a clan of demons who’ve probably decided that they should try to open the Hellmouth because that’s always such a good idea.” He shook his head. “Look, I just think that maybe you need to be more careful.”

She paused. “Okay, I can see where you’re coming from.” She sighed. “And I actually agree with you.”

His lips twitched. “There’s something I never thought I’d hear.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Don’t get used to it.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

A small smile appeared on her face. “Good.” She leaned back against the table. “We need to figure something out, Dean.”

He nodded, looking like he was already trying to come up with something as he began to pace. She watched him for a few minutes and wondered just what sort of idea Dean was going to come up with.

After a few more moments, he stopped. “I’ve got an idea.” He looked over at her. “But you’re not going to like it.”

Buffy lifted her brows. “Oh this sounds promising,” she muttered. Off of his look, she sighed. “Fine, sorry. What is this idea of yours that I’m not going to like?”

He stared at her for another moment and Buffy blinked at the look on his face. For the first time in a long time, she thought Dean actually looked nervous.

Dean shifted and then met her gaze head on. “Let’s get married.”

Buffy stared at him; sure she had heard him wrong. “Huh?”

HEE! Dean's all protective and "She shouldn't be patrolling" and Buffy's all "I can't believe you want a say in this/Can't believe you're sticking up for me" and it's love. ^_^

Can't wait to see her response to THAT question, ROFLMAO

Also, just caught the note at the top about a certain line of Dean's from an ep, and the shout-out's so very much to Mystery Spot. "I get all tingly when you take control like that." *sporfles*

Perfect response from Buffy, although I'm expecting chapter three to start off with her trying to deliver a roundhouse kick to his head. LOL
