Fic: Life's Little Edge (Buffy/Dean) R - Chapter One

Title: Life's Little Edge
Rating: R
Pairing: Buffy/Dean
Spoilers: Buffy - through Chosen. SPN - through Bloodlust.
Summary: She'd been on her own for years before she'd met the people at the Roadhouse. Despite that, she still feels alone. He seems to barely be holding himself together. They may be the only ones who can help each other.
Disclaimer: I don't own anything associated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Supernatural. They belong to Joss Whedon and Eric Kripke. The banner and icon were made by dhfreak.
Notes: This was written for the wonderful dhfreak for btvs_santa. She once issued a challenge for a story based around Buffy helping the Scoobies close the Hellmouth but not being accepted back in the group. She wanted angst, feelings of betrayal, and Buffy/Dean. I took the challenge and nothing ever came with it. I'm finally doing something about it.

Written for tamingthemuse (prompt: delirious). It's been awhile since I wrote for this story so here's hoping this came out okay, right? *crosses fingers*

Buffy wiped the steam from the mirror, staring at her reflection. Turning her head, she ran a hand through her hair and smiled a little. No touching up needed. The smile on her face widened as she pulled her hair into a ponytail. At the rate her hair was growing out, she wasn’t going to need to do any touch ups.

She was just lucky the shade of brown she’d picked was so close to her natural color.

Nodding in satisfaction, she pulled on her pajamas, frowning down at the cut on her arm as she did so. She knew that by tomorrow it would basically be gone but that didn’t mean that it didn’t need some sort of disinfectant. With a small sigh, she pulled her first aid kit out of the nightstand drawer and began to take out the stuff she’d need to make sure the wound was clean.

At least this demon hadn’t left her delirious with a fever.

Buffy smirked as she remembered the first time that had happened. The demon had managed to get in a few hits before she’d killed it and she’d been lucky to actually make it back to the Roadhouse that night. According to Ellen, she’d stumbled in, seen Ash, and had promptly demanded to know when Andrew had grown a mullet. Jo had apparently had to leave the room so that she could continue to laugh without disturbing Buffy after she’d fallen asleep.

She figured that Jo seeing her like that was about equal to Jo getting to see her drunk since she’d been such a babbler that night.

Lips twitching at the memory, Buffy began to toss out the supplies she’d used and got ready for bed.

They could have been on the road right now.

Hell, they should have been on the road but instead they were taking up the other spare bedroom in the back of the Roadhouse with Sam offering to take the cot Ellen had given them.

Dean wasn’t about to admit it but the only reason he’d decided to stay was because of the brunette that had walked in earlier. He wouldn’t deny that a part of him had checked her out but the other part of him was still remembering what had happened with Gordon a few weeks ago.

His first instinct had been to put as much distance between them as he possibly could. Once he’d gotten over that, he’d figured it was probably better to find out what he could about her.

Hell, it wasn’t like Sam was going to complain about not falling asleep in the car.

“You really think we need to stay and check her out?”

Or maybe he would.

“What are you talking about, Sam?” he asked, pulling off his shoes and setting them to the side. A flash of his dad reminding him to always set his shoes to the side so that he wouldn’t trip over them if he had to get up fast came to him and he scowled, shoving the memory away.

“You’re trying to tell me that we’re not staying here to see what’s up with the girl that walked in earlier?”

Exactly. Dean let himself grin and looked up. “Come on, Sam, you’ve got to do better than that. That one was all woman.”

Sam let out a breath. “Dean, I’m not stupid. And while I think knowing more about other hunters is a good thing, Ellen seems to trust her.”

Dropping any pretense of just wanting to make a play for the brunette, Dean raised an eyebrow. “And that’s enough for you?”

“She was right about Gordon.”

Dean tensed for a moment as he remembered how he’d been so willing to trust the man. Sam had been suspicious and that had turned out to be the right reaction seeing as how Gordon had decided to use Sam as vamp bait.

He smirked as he wondered how long it had been before Gordon had been found.

With a small sigh, he nodded at Sam. “Yeah, she was. And I’m betting that being in this business for so long, she’s a pretty good judge of character but people make mistakes. It’d be better to be sure.”

Sam studied him for a moment and then nodded at whatever it was he saw. “Okay.”

The next morning, Buffy settled at the bar, fully dressed and looking ready for anything. The only indication that she wasn’t were her eyes. She blinked a few times and took a deep breath. The shower had gone a long way to waking her up. Food would do the rest.

“Here.” Ellen slid a plate of food in front of her and gave the plate a pointed look when Buffy only stared at it for a moment.

“I’d have gotten up to make something in a couple minutes.”

Ellen smirked. “I know. But you’d have gone straight for the sugar-filled cereals.”

Buffy grinned and didn’t bother denying it. “Must be a mom thing,” she said instead.

“Must be.”

Sam walked in before Buffy could say anything else, yawning. He paused and smiled briefly at her before turning to Ellen.

“Please tell me there’s coffee that’s been made.”

She shook her head. “In the back.” She held up a hand when he moved towards the door. “And no one goes back there unless they’re family, they work for me, or I say so. So sit and I’ll get you a cup.”

He blinked at her and then nodded, sitting at the bar and glancing at Buffy. “Hi,” he said after a few moments. Her lips tilted up in an amused smile.

“Hi.”

Ellen came out with a cup in one hand and creamer in the other. She set them down in front of Sam and then pulled out a few packets of sugar as well. Sam grinned. He couldn’t deny that Ellen knew how to read a person well.

The sound of footsteps alerted each of them to Dean’s approach. Ellen took one look at him and shook her head before going to get him a cup of coffee as well.

The silence stretched out, only interrupted once by Jo shouting for Ash to get his butt downstairs if he wanted breakfast. That was followed by a thud and the sound of Ash swearing.

Dean eyed the brunette from the night before. “Hey,” he said.

Buffy fought the urge to roll her eyes and wondered if this was how every morning with these two went. “Hey,” she replied.

“So, you’re a hunter.” It wasn’t a question but Buffy nodded anyway.

“You could say that.”

He stared at her for a few moments as if trying to figure something out. “Been doing it long?”

She returned his stare with one of her own. “Since I was fifteen. You?”

“Most of my life.” He paused when Ellen walked out with a cup of coffee and gave her a half smile for it. “Thanks.”

She nodded and began cleaning glasses. “Jo’s making up a plate for both of you,” was all she said. For a few moments, it was silent again until Dean turned back to Buffy.

“So, you got a name?”

She smiled. “Yup, had it since the day I was born even. You?”

Ellen smiled and Sam snorted, taking a drink of coffee when Dean glanced at him. When Dean turned back to Buffy, his look was a mixture of annoyance and amusement.

“Yeah,” he told her. He smirked. “I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.”

Buffy grinned, appreciating him, and took one last bite of her breakfast. “Not yet.” She stood and picked up her plate. “Thanks for breakfast, Ellen,” she called as she went into the kitchen.

Sam stared at her, remembering what Ellen had said earlier and then turned when he heard Dean set down his cup. Dean glanced at the door and then Ellen before turning back to him.

“Well, I think that went well, don’t you?”

See, I kept waiting like an idiot for you to post it yesterday night, and I kept waiting and waiting and I didn't see it and I was getting worried, and I just did the voting and there you were, and you'd gotten it in earlier than I'd thought. *headdesk*

Oh man. I'm absolutely loving this! Poor Ash *snickers*, I love Ellen as a mom for everyone, and then...

“Hi.”

WHY is that the cutest thing ever? I just love Sam and Buffy exchanging small, quiet "Hi"s before breakfast. *draws hearts around it*

Dean eyed the blonde from the night before. “Hey,” he said.

Buffy fought the urge to roll her eyes and wondered if this was how every morning with these two went.

*cackles* Oh Buffy. I love you so.

DUDE. So much LOVE. Buffy simply pwns. That was such a thing for her to say, and then to get amusement out of Dean for it...priceless.

*hugs* Haven't heard from you, really, or seen you around except for the fic posts, so I hope you're just really busy, and that you won't be busy soon, because you've been missed. And if life's giving you a hard time, you let me know, and I'll kick it for you, 'kay?

MWAH!
