By the time Dean was ready to go, Sam was already on the laptop. He shook his head as he shrugged his jacket on.

“Last chance, Sam.” Dean raised an eyebrow as he picked up the keys.

Sam hesitated. Part of him wanted to grin, close the laptop, and go with his brother. Not because he really wanted to go out but because he always had a feeling that something was going to happen. Always had that nagging voice in the back of his mind urging him not to let Dean out of his sight.

Acting paranoid and following Dean around as if he were a toddler wasn’t going to help their situation though. Even if that weren’t the case, Sam knew he’d be able to get more research done if Dean weren’t there.

“You go ahead.” He gestured to the laptop. “I’ve got a lot of e-mail to catch up on.” Which was a much better excuse than ordering a pizza while in a restaurant.

Dean gave him a look that Sam had long ago come to recognize as You are such a crap liar but I’m going to pretend I believe you anyway. “Right,” was all he said.

As if it would prove he was telling the truth, Sam looked back at the laptop. “Becky says hi.”

Dean paused, surprise briefly appearing on his face. “I didn’t know you guys still talked.”

Sam shrugged. “Yeah. She sends me updates on how everyone is doing. She said she’ll wait about a week for a response before she starts worrying. It’s her way of...” he trailed off, knowing that he wouldn’t have to finish that sentence.

Her way of making sure I’m still alive, still walking, still fighting. Surviving.

Dean nodded in understanding. He didn’t say anything for a few more moments and Sam shifted in his seat, wondering how much longer they could stay like that with the tension growing between them.

Suddenly, Dean twirled the keys and it was as if the moment had never happened. “Try not to have too much fun without me, Sam.” The grin he gave Sam let him know exactly what Dean meant.

Sam shook his head as Dean left. That porn joke had gotten old months ago.

“You shine. Like the stars.”

Dean turned and stared at the woman standing next to him. He frowned as he thought back on what she’d said.

“Excuse me?”

She smiled as if she knew something he didn’t. “You’re bright as the sun, pet. But there’s an eclipse coming and it can’t be stopped.”

His frown deepened and he shifted so that the holy water he kept in his jacket would be easier to reach. Something about her was off. He may not have been the psychic of the family but years of hunting had given him the ability to realize when he was dealing with something supernatural.

He tensed when she lifted two fingers, pointing them towards his eyes. Every instinct screamed at him to look away and vaguely he wondered why he couldn’t.

“Be in my eyes.” She tilted her head and reached up, covering his eyes with her hand. “See with your heart,” she whispered. She took away her hand.

Dean sucked in a breath, staring at the man he’d spent his entire life trying to make proud. The man he still wanted to make proud.

Dean blinked and shook his head, trying to clear it. Quickly, he scanned his surroundings, searching for any sign that would tell him where he was.

There was none.

Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, forcing himself to think back, to remember what had happened.

The woman with dark hair. She talked about the stars and then he looked at her and...

Dean’s eyes snapped open as it all came rushing back and he fought the urge to be sick. He’d come here willingly, believing his dad was there by some miracle.

“It’s big, son. It’s the only reason I’d ever be allowed to come back. We have to go now.”

That was all that had been said and he’d followed with practically no question at all. The trust he’d always had in his father was the reason he was here at all.

Shit, Sam was going to be so pissed when he found out.

He paused as he realized something. Sam wouldn’t know. He wouldn’t know until the morning when he woke up and realized that Dean hadn’t come back.

Dean knew what Sam would be doing right now. He’d be waiting up for Dean and pretending he wasn’t. On other nights like this, Dean had walked into the room to find Sam watching TV or reading a book, eyes fixed anywhere but on the door. Not long after Dean was home, Sam would casually turn off the TV or close his book and then slide further down in his bed and lay there until he fell asleep.

Tonight, Sam would try to stay awake but Dean knew that with the way Sam had been sleeping, he wouldn’t make it through the night.

Which meant that he was stuck here until morning, at least, unless he could get out of here on his own.

He could tell that they hadn’t used rope on him. Rope didn’t hold your arms out to the side, didn’t feel like it was stretching them with the weight of the metal.

Frowning, he moved his hands, hoping he could find something to try and wedge into the locks.

“No use in doing that.”

Dean turned towards the sound of the voice, eyes wary. For a moment, all he could see was the flash of something white and then the man walked into the light, a smirk on his face.

The man walked towards him and Dean tensed as the same feeling from the night before washed over him. Whatever the woman was, the man felt the same as she had.

“You really think I’d use rope for something as important as this?” The man’s smirk morphed into a smile. “Not likely. Too much chance you could get out. Which is the reason you’re chained like that. No chance that you’ll be able to pick the lock.”

Dean glared but didn’t say anything.

“In case you’re wondering, the name’s Spike. It’s just you and me for now.” There’s a gleam in his eyes that Dean recognized as triumph. “Dru’s off making plans on how to get your boy here now.”

The fear that Dean had barely acknowledged reared up, choking him at the thought that Sam would be walking in here blind because there’s no way he’ll be able to give him any kind of warning. They don’t have a secret codeword for I got tricked into coming here by something that looked like our dead dad.

“I see that gets you.” Spike grinned. “You know, I’m wondering something about you. A bit of debate that I’ve been having with myself.” He pauses here and it’s obvious to Dean that this is the part where he’s supposed to ask what the debate is. But he won’t ask, won’t give this asshole the satisfaction. “Nature versus nurture.” He began to circle Dean. “I wonder if you’re a hunter because it comes to you so naturally or if you’re a hunter because that’s what your dear old daddy made you.”

Dean jerked at his chains and cursed himself for the movement when Spike laughed in a low voice.

“Struck a nerve there, did I?” He paused in front of Dean. “I think I know the answer anyway so it doesn’t matter now.”

Spike turned back and began to walk back towards the shadows. “We’ll see what kind of hunter you are when you hunt the very ones you try to protect.”

Sam was up and out of his seat the second he heard the knock on the door. He didn’t bother looking out the window, not when a search of the town had caused him nothing but worry.

He’d found the Impala and had fought not to rip the town apart trying to find his brother. Instead, he’d done what he would do with any case and asked questions all day, getting frustrated when he hadn’t gotten an answer that would lead him to Dean.

“Yeah, I remember seeing him. Sat in the corner and then left with some broad.”

“Oh yeah, the chick he left with? Hot and not from around here. What was that accent, Sal? Welsh? No? Then what was it? Oh yeah, British.”

“Dea—“ He stopped and stared at the woman in front of him. Instinctively, he tensed. “Who are you?”

“He needs you.”

Her voice had him reaching back to check for his weapon. British. This was the woman Dean had left with the night before. “Where is he?”

She smiled. “He’s at my home, waiting. He can’t move, you see. The darkness is surrounding him as we speak. He needs his family now. Will you come to him?”

Sam stared at her and he knew that going with her would be a bad idea. He should get her inside and force her to tell him where Dean was, get the answers he wanted, needed, from her in any way he could.

But this was Dean’s life that could be on the line and Sam didn’t know how much time he had. He didn’t even know if she was the reason Dean wasn’t here. Dean could have gotten hurt helping her.

As her lips lifted in a small smile and she held out a hand, Sam knew that wasn’t the case. This wasn’t some innocent victim and taking her hand would be just one more step down the road he’d started on when he’d agreed to work with Ruby.

Taking her hand would lead to his brother.

Decision made, Sam took her hand and stepped outside.

Oh, there's more. As you very well know since I pretty much laid out the plot of the next part for you. LOL.

Hee, which icon? Evil looking Sam or the Spike/Dru one? (Man, I need one where all four are together and look evil. Or just where all four are together. *nods*)

And I already started the next part. *looks around* That part that nearly gave you a heart attack? Yeah, that's where I'm at. *grins*

No, no, no. You see? You can't actually end it there. Perfect as it might be in itself, it is crying out for the actual event. Or is that me? Hmmm. Could be me, crying out for the actual event, and the aftermath, and the next bit after that.
Lovely voices, both internal and external, and convincing emotions.
Very nice.

Thanks! :)

The actual event is coming up soon. I've pretty much got it worked out for the next part with this newest prompt. Hopefully I'll get it written and posted before there's only five minutes left until Sunday. *grins*

Lovely voices, both internal and external, and convincing emotions.

Thank you so much! Those are the things that I'm always nervous about so I'm so glad that you think they've been working.

Eek, I'm with her - points up. You evil person for ending it there. Bites nails.

I love all the little details which show how well the boys know each other, like Dean knowing Sam will be sitting up waiting, while he pretends to do anything but.

Don't go with Dru, Sammy, you know it's not a good idea and you're going to do it anyway, 'cause that's what brothers do.

Great use of the prompt, Spike really got under Dean's skin there.

More's coming soon later this week! I promise!

I could so see Sam waiting up for Dean and pretending not to and then as soon as Dean's home and he sees that he's okay, then oh! Time for bed. And I could see Dean so knowing about it and that being why he doesn't stay out all night or something. Because they'd know each other that well. *nods*

I'm having a lot of fun with the fact that so far Dean's basically been tricked into going but Sam will go completely willingly just because he wants to get to Dean.

Thank you! :D

And why is the picture of this:

Decision made, Sam took her hand and stepped outside.

So pretty? Sam and Dru, hand in hand. *happy sighs*

And why is THIS:

Dean jerked at his chains and cursed himself for the movement when Spike laughed in a low voice.

With Dean and Spike face to face is also so pretty. *happy sighs once more*

So much pretty. Want more pretty! *pouts pretty*

Hee, thank you! And the rest is currently sitting in Word, partially typed. :D

Hmm...*eyes icon of Sam and then looks at Dru* I have no idea. Maybe we've just got a soft spot for Dru with people who could (or are) considered white hats? Or that could just be me because I know I love seeing Dru and Xander getting cozy in fics too.

And well, Spike and Dean....hell, it's Spike and Dean! LOL. Hence the pretty.

More soon! Cross my heart!
