Ficlet: Getting To Know You (Sam/Dawn) PG
Title: Getting To Know You
Series: Trust in You
Rating: PG
Series Summary: At Stanford, Sam meets and falls for Dawn instead of Jess. I played with Dawn's age and made her a couple years older so that she and Sam would be the same age but other than that, I haven't changed anything.
Summary (This Part): It's the first day of classes and Sam's got himself a new friend. Or is that the start of a crush?
Timeline: Post-Chosen for Buffy, pre-series for Supernatural
Disclaimer: I don't own anything associated with Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Supernatural. They belong to Joss Whedon and Eric Kripke.

Sam sighed as the professor dismissed them. Somehow the fact that all freshmen had to take this course didn’t make it anymore interesting.

He stuffed his books into his bag as he stood and began making his way to the door. They didn’t have much time between classes and he had Italian next. He quickened his steps, shoving a hand in his back pocket and pulling out his schedule. Frowning, he glanced at the building and room number he was supposed to be in, mentally going over the campus map he’d studied the day before.

“Left,” he muttered, turning sharply and narrowly missing running into a group of people. He sent them a sheepish smile and kept walking. Right and follow that path for a while and then another left. This time when he smiled, it was just a bit smug. Found it!

The room was simple enough to find since it was right there near the front of the building and he let out a small sigh of relief as he entered the room to find that the professor hadn’t arrived yet and there were still plenty of free seats. He grabbed one towards the back and pulled out a notebook before bending to dig through his bag for a pen. Vaguely, he registered someone settling in the seat next to him but he didn’t look up.

“Let me guess, you’re taking this because it’ll be an easy grade.”

Sam’s head shot up and he blinked when he saw Dawn grinning at him. “Uh, no actually. Why?”

She shrugged. “I figured if you could speak Latin well enough to perform a ritual then Italian would probably be cake for you.”

“Oh. No. I actually took French in high school so I wanted to go for something new.” He tilted his head. “What about you?”

“Italian was the option I liked best.” Off his look, she shrugged. “My sister and I lived in Rome for awhile and so I learned Italian, French, German, Spanish…” She trailed off and flipped open her notebook. “Anyway, out of the ones the university offered, Italian was the one I liked the best.”

“Rome, huh?”

“Yeah. We moved there after the town sort of…um…died.”

Sam raised an eyebrow. “Your town died?”

“Sort of. We lived in Sunnydale. The town that is now nothing more than a big crater.”

He nodded. He remembered hearing about that on the news and how there’d been no word on why people had suddenly started evacuating but not long after, the town had caved in. “Lucky you got out.”

Some emotion flickered over her face too fast for Sam to identify. “I know.” She paused and then gave him a bright smile. “So, how’d the ritual go? Anything explode?”

Sam stared at her. “Explode?”

“Believe me, even with the simplest of rituals, it can happen,” she said with a small laugh.

He grinned. “Speaking from personal experience?”

“That pillow never knew what hit it.”

He laughed and settled back in his seat so that he could stretch his legs out. “No, nothing exploded.”

“And did you find anything or was the room clear?”

Sam turned his head, pausing before answering. This wasn’t what he had come to college for. He hadn’t come to talk about rituals and spirits. He’d come to get away from that life, to try and be normal. He should probably be finding a way to change the subject by now.

But Dawn didn’t talk about this stuff as if it were strange or just some sort of cheap thrill. She talked as if it were, well, normal.

Maybe that was why he was so comfortable talking about it with her. There was no chance she’d laugh it off or look at him like he was a freak. No, he had a feeling he could tell her exactly what he’d done and she’d be able to respond with a similar story or offer him more tips.

“No. There wasn’t anything there.”

She nodded. “Good. It would have sucked to have to try and fit that in between classes, I bet.”

Sam frowned at the thought. “Yeah.”

The professor walking in stopped the conversation before it could go any further and Sam listened as he began to take role, making a note of when Dawn raised her hand.

Summers. Dawn Summers.

He smiled. Somehow, that name just fit her. He glanced up as he took a syllabus and passed the pile to Dawn, checking to see just how much attention the professor was paying before he nudged her foot with his, waiting until she looked over to scribble out a quick note on the side of his syllabus.

Coffee after class?

She read it and smiled, glancing to the front before reaching over and writing her response next to his question.

Sure.

Thanks! ^_^ No need for the puppy eyes, lol. I've already got an idea in the works for part three and it involves Sam's cell phone and Dean. (Hey, I figure in the pilot, Sam mentions that he hasn't heard from Dean in two years so that means they kept in contact for at least a year or two. Which okay, Kripke said that it was supposed to be that Sam hadn't heard from him in four years but his mistake is my gain in this case. LOL.)
