Temporary Insanity (PG-13) Veronica, Wallace, Mac
Title: Temporary Insanity
Author: blue_icy_rose
Characters/Pairings: Veronica, Wallace, Mac, one mention of Dick
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1581
Spoilers/Warnings: Er...one swear word, I think. LOL. I think that's pretty much it. Nothing major from the show is mentioned. Oh and there's a nod to one of Veronica's lines from "Normal is the Watchword" in there. And there's a nod to one of my favorite Spike lines as well. (Think of the episode "Becoming" when you read this.)
Summary: After graduating from college, Keith sends Veronica to Scotland for her gift. Wallace and Mac go with her. This is just a glimpse into their day.
Notes: Well, this isn't my best work but I was determined to get this done, even if it is a couple hours late. Unfortunately, I've been having trouble writing VM fic lately so if something feels off, feel free to let me know. I was hoping to capture the fun side of these three so here's hoping. Feedback is always welcome and I hope you enjoy. Written for vmtruechallenge.

But first, a few things. Yes, you can stay in the castle they film Harry Potter at. (Kristina, I so need to thank Rachel for that bit of info! LOL.)

Second, if you're interested, links to the recipes for what they ordered will be at the bottom, as will a picture of the castle they visit. Enjoy!

Veronica took a deep breath as she tilted her head back. She sighed and grinned. If anyone had told her last year that she’d be in Scotland, with Wallace and Mac, as a part of a graduation gift from her father, she’d have been sure to tell them they were nuts. But here she was, in a country that had more green than she’d ever seen in her entire life, feeling more relaxed than she had in years. Looking over at her two friends, she realized that the same thing could be said for the two of them. Away from Neptune and all the memories it held seemed to have left them feeling as if a weight had been lifted from their shoulders.

“So, come on. We still haven’t decided where to go first,” Wallace said, interrupting her thoughts. “I vote for a castle. There’s plenty to choose from.”

“We’re staying in a castle,” Mac reminded him.

“So? What’s your point?”

“I’m pretty sure it was that we’re already staying in a castle.”

Wallace stared at her as if she were crazy. “And again, I say so? How many castles do you get to see back in California?” he asked. Mac paused and thought about this.

“Good point.”

“What if we stay in?”

This time it was Veronica who was on the receiving end of the crazy look. “What?”

Wallace stared at her suspiciously for a few moments. “You’re just saying that because we’re staying in the castle where they film Harry Potter and you’re just dying to get a glimpse of him, aren’t you?”

Veronica shook her head. “No. I’m saying that because I’m dying to get a glimpse of Tom Felton.”

“Who?”

She frowned at him. “The blond, Wallace, the blond.”

“The jackass?”

“He’s just so pretty.” That sentence seemed to sum it all up for Veronica as Wallace shook his head in disappointment.

“Girl, that is just sad.”

Mac raised an eyebrow. “Is that really how you pick your favorites?”

She thought about it a moment, before nodding. “Yeah.”

Wallace clearing his throat and motioning to the paper in his hand had them turning to look at him. “Since all you two seem to care about is where you can pick up guys—an activity that’s usually reserved for guys, by the way—I decided to pick where we’d go.”

Mac smirked. “You wanted to pick up guys? Wallace, I had no idea.”

He didn’t respond, only scowled at her. Fighting back a laugh, she held up her hands in mock surrender.

“Okay, okay. Why don’t you tell us where we’ll be going today, Mr. Tour Guide?”

Wallace stared at her a minute before rolling his eyes. “Castle Stalker.”

Veronica snorted. “Sounds like a friendly place.” She sighed dramatically. “Why, it’s been so long since I had my very own stalker. I can’t wait to pick one up today at the castle. How much do you think they charge for redheads? I haven’t been stalked by a redhead yet.”

“When were you stalked by a blond?”

“Does Dick slapping my ass count?”

Mac thought about it for a moment. “Yeah.”

“Well, then, there you go.” Veronica nodded. Before anyone could say anything, she lifted her nose in the air and said, “Now come, to the castle.”

Wallace shook his head as the two girls laughed. “I don’t know why I’m friends with you two,” he muttered, walking after them.

The three stared up at Castle Stalker, bewildered expressions on their faces. Finally, Mac broke the silence.

“It’s a big rock.”

Wallace turned to give her a pointed look. “What are you complaining for? Do you have a rock this big?”

“Is that supposed to be some sort of euphemism?” Veronica innocently interrupted. Mac snorted as Wallace flushed, hunching his shoulders a bit.

“What is this, pick on Wallace day?”

Reaching out, she punched him in the arm. “Think of it as a day with the guys.”

The look he gave her was skeptical, at best, though there was the hint of a smile on his face as well. “You want me to think of you as guys?”

“Guys with breasts.”

Horror immediately came over his face. “Oh man, Veronica. I did not need that image.” He rubbed his eyes shaking his head. “That is all sorts of wrong.”

“There, there.” Veronica reached out and patted him on the shoulder. “Will it help if we scratch ourselves and burp?”

“You can do the burping.” Mac grinned. “I’m feeling generous today.”

“My heart is all aflutter.”

Wallace stared at the two of them before dropping to sit on a rock. “What made me think it would be a good idea to come to a foreign country with the two of you?” he asked. Since it was obvious he didn’t expect an answer, both girls stayed silent. “Insanity. Temporary insanity,” he muttered to himself. “Never again."

Veronica raised an eyebrow at him, exchanging an amused glance with Mac. They left him sitting there as they began to explore the area, moving carefully so they wouldn’t slip. The wet rocks glistened where the sun hit them and the two were grateful for all the green that was growing around them as well as it provided traction. Mac edged closer to the edge and peered over.

“What do you think would happen if someone wanted to go for a swim?” she asked.

“They’d end up hitting their head on one of the rocks below, I imagine,” Veronica replied without hesitation.

“Right. So swimming, bad idea.”

“You think?” Wallace snorted, then grinned.

“Well, look who finally decided to join us in the land of sanity.”

“Temporary insanity, you mean. I’m sticking to that story.”

“I guess this means we get to commit you. Which is good since I was starting to worry.”

Veronica rolled her eyes, a small smile on her face as she listened to the two tease each other. “If you’re done, I’ve got a better idea.” She waited until they had turned to face her. “Food? I’m starving.”

~*~

“Okay, I have no idea what I’m going to get,” Mac decided as she looked over her choices. She frowned and looked up. “What about you guys?”

“Millionaire’s Shortbread,” Veronica said with a grin. “Chocolate, cream, and caramel. All of the major food groups.”

Wallace laughed and shook his head. “You forgot caffeine.”

She blinked at him. “I thought that one was a given.”

“Vegetarian Haggis.” Mac sat with a smile. “Ha. Now…dessert.”

“How do you know you’ll even have room for dessert?” Wallace asked as he continued to look over the different choices.

“I’ll make room for dessert. There’s no way I’m coming to Scotland and not having some kind of dessert.”

Veronica beamed with pride. “Isn’t she great?” She sighed. “My little girl, all grown up and getting dessert.”

“Shut up,” Mac muttered. Veronica smirked before turning back to her menu.

“Aw man, I’ve got to try this. The name alone makes it impossible not to give it a shot.” Wallace sat back. “Scottish Lion Rumble de Thump.” He grinned as both Veronica and Mac gave him blank looks.

“Do you even know what that is?” Veronica finally asked. He shrugged.

“Nope. Sounds cool though. And I’m having Moira’s Pineapple Cakes for dessert.”

She shook her head again. “Sure. Whatever you say.” She glanced at Mac. “Do you know what dessert you’re getting?”

“Jerry’s Fruit-Filled Scones. Now stop stalling and pick an actual meal.”

“Are you trying to tell me that what I picked isn’t a meal?”

“It’s dessert.”

“Sometimes dessert is a meal,” Veronica pointed out. When Mac only looked at her, she sighed. “Oh fine.” She paused. “Hearty Lentil Soup with Bacon and Herbs. There. Picked something.” She frowned at Mac. “Happy?”

“Thrilled.”

“Glad to help.”

~*~

After Veronica had spent almost ten full minutes laughing at Wallace’s expression when he’d learned just what was in his meal, the three were able to actually finish their food.

“It wasn’t that funny,” Wallace insisted as they walked down the street once they had paid.

“Oh, believe me when I say it was,” Veronica said. Mac nodded, the corners of her mouth tilting up slightly.

He shook his head, scowling at both of them. “Yeah, sure. Now, what are we doing next? Edinburgh Castle?”

Veronica and Mac glanced at each other and grinned. “Actually, Wallace…” Veronica trailed off and Wallace stared at her, wondering just what she was about to ask him to do.

“Crap. What do you want?”

She smiled. “You see, I need a favor.”

He groaned. “Sometimes I really hate that phrase,” he said. Mac grinned, giving him no sympathy. “What kind of favor?”

“We’ll go to Edinburgh Castle but first, we want to go see Nessy.”

“Nessy?” Wallace frowned in confusion.

“The Loch Ness Monster?”

He stopped and looked from Veronica to Mac and back again. Both of them stood, looking at him hopefully. “Aw man, how do I get myself into these things?” He sighed. “Let’s go.”

“You’re the best BFF ever.” Veronica smirked as Mac snorted at the nickname.

“How many times do I have to tell you not to say that kind of stuff?” he teased.

“At least once more.”

“Don’t say that kind of stuff.”

Veronica glanced over at Mac, raising an eyebrow. Mac nodded, biting the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing as Veronica turned to Wallace and gave him a bright smile. “Sure thing, BFF.”

“Agh! Veronica!”

I loved all the snark and banter! Veronica has got to be a Gryffindor and a Harry fan though! Draco?? I'll let it slide because she specified she wanted to see Tom Felton and didn't mention Draco...Hee.

LOL, see I figured that Veronica would definitely like Harry and the Gryffindors but would appreciate the fact that Slytherins can be quite sneaky. (Though their plans never seem to as planned it seems, do they? I so need to reread the books again. LOL.)

And, okay, I just wanted to switch it up a little. Plus, Tom Felton's older than Daniel Radcliffe so less of a chance of a "cradle robber" remark. Though I'm seeing possibilities for that now...agh! No!

Anyway, thanks! ^_^ I'm so glad you liked it!

It was all cute and funny. I loved it. It lifted my mood. I could so see the three of them doing something like that too. LOVED it.

I really loved this banter about food and where to go to next. Vacationning with Veronica isn't the easy thing in the world, I'm sure.

Great job!

Thank you! And no, I can't imagine that going on vacation with Veronica being the easiest thing...but I'm sure it's never boring. *g*

One question. Where do you go to make reservations to stay at the castle Harry Potter was filmed at. I really liked this fic. I have always wanted to go to Scotland. I love the pictures and recipes you included. I like what Wallace ordered. I wonder what would it be like if Logan was there. Great story.
Nicole: Moony! Padfoot!blue_icy_rose on September 5th, 2006 05:07 am (UTC)
Hmm...I'm not sure where you'd go exactly, but I can ask my friend the next time I see her if you'd like. She went there this summer with her family so she could probably find out, I'm sure.

And I'm so glad you liked the pictures and recipes! ^_^ I had fun looking those up and then realizing that I'd want to cook some of them myself, lol.

Yup, finally managed to write a fic where Logan didn't make an appearance at all...I'm pretty sure I shocked myself. Of course, I've been wondering what it would have been like with Logan there as well...

Anyway, thanks for reading and I'll ask my friend about the castle and let you know, okay? ^_^

LOL, and see how late I am in responding?

Of course, I had to include the Spike reference. ^_^ How could I not?

Well, at least I replied before 2008, right? Right.
