Author's Note: This was supposed to be posted days ago but RL once again threw me off with tests and papers. So here it is, midnight of the deadline and I'm posting it. Anyway, this was written for the Cheesy Love Song Challenge and my song was These Dreams by Heart. The lyrics can be found here. Also posted at cheesy_love.

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Duncan had a routine that rarely wavered. He woke up at 6:00 a.m. so that he could get in the shower while his wife slept for another half hour. When she was getting in the shower, he’d brush his teeth, get dressed and comb his hair. While she got dressed, he went downstairs and made the coffee. They’d have breakfast together before heading off to work while the kids went to school.

And the whole time, in the back of his mind, he’d be remembering his dreams.

“Do you miss me?”

Duncan stared up at big blue eyes that had always managed to pull him in. He nodded. “Yeah. Every day.”

She smiled. “Good.” She leaned forward and brushed her lips against his. “We still have this at least, right Donut?”

He smiled and nodded. “Always will.”

Work was the same as it always was. Day in and day out, the same tasks and the same people. Duncan never would have considered himself to be the sort who counted down the moments until it was time to go home but he was. Oh, he enjoyed his job but he would much rather be at home with his family. It was as simple as that.

“Something important tonight, Duncan?”

He looked up to find his co-worker, Gary, standing there and shook his head. “No. Just a bit anxious to get home.”

“Ah, hoping for a nice night in then?” Gary nodded, a knowing grin on his face. “I just love those.”

Duncan shook his head. “I’m sure you do.” When Gary opened his mouth, he held up a hand. “But you’re not getting details on any of my nights in. Live with the disappointment.”

“I think I can manage.”

Laughing, Duncan turned back to his desk, allowing his mind to wander.

It wasn’t his wife that he thought of though.

~*~*~*~

He sucked in a breath at the feel of her fingers slipping up and under his shirt. She laughed. “Really, Duncan, it’s like you’re a virgin.” She smirked. “Which you’re not. I should know after all. I’m the one who broke you in, so to speak.”

He made a face. “Very mature, Lilly.”

Another laugh. “Almost as mature as that face you’re making. Besides, I’m a teenager, I’ll always be a teenager. What’s your excuse?”

He paused and ran a hand through her hair. “Maybe you just bring out the teenager in me.”

Lilly studied him for a moment and then laughed again. “Of course I do. I always have.” She spun away and turned to glance over her shoulder. “But really, what would your wife say if she ever found out about us?”

Duncan groaned. “Lilly,” he started, only to stop when she shook her head.

“Relax, lover. I’m not going to be the one to shatter Veronica’s happy world. She’s still my best friend.”

“You’re dead and we’ve been…involved since you were alive. How is that the definition of a best friend?”

She didn’t answer, just looked at him as if the answer should be obvious. He supposed to Lilly, it was.

Veronica was going through a pile of papers by the time Duncan got home. He glanced around and frowned.

“What’s all this?”

She glanced up, the distracted smile on her face telling him that she was still thinking about whatever it was she was reading.

“I got a tip. These guys won’t know what hit them,” she said, tilting her head back to accept the kiss he gave her.

“With you handling the investigation, I bet they won’t.”

Veronica laughed, shoving his shoulder lightly. “Get out of here,” she told him. “Lilly’s upstairs. She says she has something to show you. From the sounds of it, it’s important.”

The important thing turned out to be a flier to the latest dance at her school, which was followed by a session of pouting in hopes of a new dress.

He gave in. He always did.

~*~*~*~

“So you named her after me. Should I be flattered that you couldn’t forget me or should I be pissed that you tried to make her like me?”

Duncan blinked. “I loved you so I named my daughter after you. It’s not a crime, Lilly, and it doesn’t mean that I’m trying to have her become like you.”

“That’s because there could never be anyone like me.”

He rolled his eyes. “Modest,” he muttered.

“If you wanted modesty, Duncan, you’re with the wrong girl.”

“Hey Dad, is it true that chocolate chips are chocolate bunnies’ poop?”

“Josh! Where did you hear that?” Veronica demanded as Lilly wrinkled her nose and their other son, Bill, laughed. Duncan fought back a smile.

“Sam said it was.”

“Well, Sam is wrong,” Duncan said.

“Are you sure? They’re both made out of chocolate.”

Bill grinned. “If it was true that would mean that your favorite cookie was actually a bunny poop cookie.”

"Ew, gross!”

“Bill,” Veronica warned.

“Sorry, Mom.” He glanced down at the table, a small smile still on his lips.

“That is so disgusting,” Lilly muttered.

“At least we were done eating,” Veronica said. Lilly nodded.

“Uncle Logan called today,” Bill announced. Duncan looked up to see Veronica studying her glass. Josh, on the other hand, immediately brightened at the mention of Logan, who was always good for playing video games with them and telling stories. Lilly grinned, knowing she’d probably get a gift out of the visit. Logan loved to travel and whenever he decided to stop and visit them, he made sure to bring gifts as if that would help distract them from the tension between him and their parents.

“Yeah! He said he was coming over this weekend,” Josh added. Duncan took a deep breath and smiled, wondering when the relationship between him and Logan had become so strained. He glanced over at Veronica again.

“That’s great,” he told them, pretending not to notice the faint blush that appeared on her cheeks every time Logan came over.

~*~*~*~

“So, do you think they’re sleeping together?”

Duncan’s head snapped towards her. “What?”

“Logan and Veronica. You think they’re sleeping together?” Lilly repeated. “Because really, you can’t blame her. After all, you’re not completely faithful either, are you?”

“I…” Duncan paused. “I don’t know if this counts.”

Lilly scowled at him. “Are you implying that I don’t count just because I’m dead? I’m the best damn lay you’ve ever had, Donut, so don’t even go there.”

He rolled his eyes. “Because it’s dreams, Lilly. This is all a dream.”

Now she smiled. “Are you sure about that?”

~*~*~*~

“So Logan’s coming?”

There was a pause. “Yeah. I found out about an hour before you got home and I planned to tell you tonight but the kids beat me to it.”

Duncan glanced over at her and saw the way she avoided his gaze. That, combined with the way she felt the need to explain herself to him, told him everything he needed to know.

He should probably confront her about that but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything. They didn’t need the conflict in their lives. He smiled instead.

“Why don’t we go to bed?”

~*~*~*~

Lilly laughed as she pushed Duncan down on his back, moving so that she was straddling him. His eyes closed when he felt her lips on his neck and his hands moved to her hips, holding her in place.

“You thought of me again, didn’t you?” she whispered.

He shook his head in denial. “No,” he said.

She laughed and pressed herself down against him, nodding. “You were. You always think of me.” Her hands kept moving and it seemed that every time she touched a part of him, he lost a piece of clothing. He stared up at her in confusion, wondering when she had had time to take off her clothes. She hadn’t stopped touching him. “Don’t be stupid, Donut. You know how I got all your clothes off. It’s because you wanted them gone.”

He frowned. “How did you know…” His voice trailed off.

Her grin was smug. “Wouldn’t you like to know?” she asked. Her head fell back as she lowered herself on him. He groaned.

“This isn’t happening,” he whispered. Lilly laughed again and Duncan would have shoved her off of him but the way she moved over him felt too good.

“You always were the one in denial, weren’t you? No need for it here. It’s just you and me now.” She looked down at him, raking her nails down his chest. “There’s no Veronica here, no Logan.” She squeezed her muscles around him. “Just us.”

He knew it was wrong, knew that if Lilly had lived and people had found out it would have all gone to hell. They would have been told that it was wrong for them to be together this way.

But Lilly was dead, no one had ever found out and Duncan couldn’t see how this was wrong. Not when it felt so damn good and right.

Lilly had always been the one who could make him feel so much, so fast.

As their pace picked up and Lilly’s grip on him tightened, he could feel his body tensing. He moaned as sensation overwhelmed him the way it always did with Lilly. And as he came, he could only say, could only think one thing.

“Lilly.”

~*~*~*~

Duncan’s eyes snapped open as he realized that the woman in his arms wasn’t his sister. She wasn’t Lilly but Veronica. He let out a breath.

She stirred, opening her eyes to look at him. “Duncan? What’s the matter?”

“Nothing.” He glanced down at his chest, expecting to see scratches there, remembering the feel of Lilly’s nails on his skin. “Go back to sleep.” She smiled and nodded, obediently closing her eyes. Duncan studied her for a moment, knowing that though he loved her, what they had would never be as passionate as what he and Lilly had.

He closed his eyes and let himself sink into dreams of his sister.
