tvrealm: Episode 3x08: Why You Should Watch...
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I love this show for so many reasons but I'm going to try and keep this from getting too long. It'll be a challenge because I can seriously talk about Buffy for Lord only knows how long and I've got all sorts of awesome memories attached to this show - whether it's from the show or it's remembering how my mom and I used to make Tuesday nights our night to stay in so we could watch together.

So, here's why everyone all of you should also be watching Buffy:

Buffy Summers

Willow: There's a Slayer handbook?
Buffy: Wait. Handbook? What handbook? How come I don't have a handbook?
Willow: Is there a T-shirt, too? 'Cause that would be cool...
Giles: After meeting you, Buffy, I realized that, uh, the handbook would be of no use in your case.

Buffy is one of my favorite characters that's ever been on TV. I think she's one of those characters that it's very easy to try and make perfect if you like her or a total bitch if you don't. But for me, the appeal is that she's neither of those things. Does she have an attitude? Can she be rude or inconsiderate? Does she have issues? Yes, to all of the above. She also loves her family and friends and would die to protect them. She likes to pun while she fights, she mangles the names of a number of demons, and even when she wants to just step back and give up, she fights. Buffy is the Slayer and, yeah, maybe that gives her an edge. But she's also human and that's what makes her one of the characters that you want to root for, whether you like her or not.

Spike

Spike: I may be love's bitch but at least I'm man enough to admit it.

Without getting into too much detail and spoiling everything that happens, I'm just going to say that Spike has one of hell of a storyline. It's so interesting to watch him from season to season and see the changes and the character development. It's very easy to assume that he's going to just be a typical villain when he first shows up but even before his first episode is halfway over, you can tell that that's not going to be the case. He's a demon that's capable of love even if, as Dru says at one point, demons don't always love wisely. It didn't take long for Spike to become another favorite of mine.

The Dialogue

The dialogue on this show is fantastic. It's been nine years since this show ended and I still quote it now. There are pop culture references galore and the way that they're dropped in the conversation always makes me grin. There's almost always at least one bit of dialogue that will make you crack up and even in the completely serious episodes, if you don't crack up, you'll at least smile. There are also some speeches that will just touch you or make you tear up. And just to give you a few examples, here you go:

Giles: Uh, when I've examined it, you can, uh, uh, skim it.
Ms. Calendar: Scan it, Rupert. That's scan it.
Giles: Of course.
Ms. Calendar: Oh, I know, our ways are strange to you, but soon you will join us in the 20th century. With three whole years to spare!
Giles: Ms. Calendar, I'm sure your computer science class is fascinating, but I happen to believe that one can survive in modern society without being a slave to the, um, idiot box.
Ms. Calendar: That's TV. The idiot box is TV. This is the good box!
Giles: I still prefer a good book.

Buffy: So, you've been seeing a guy, and you don't know what he looks like? Okay, this is a puzzle. No, wait, I'm good at these. Does it involve a midget and a block of ice?

Principal Snyder: Hey, gang! This place is Fun City, huh?
Buffy: Principal Snyder?
Principal Snyder: Call me Snyder. Just a last name, like... Barbarino. Ooh! I'm so stoked!

Xander: Aw, man, it's Nazi Germany, and I've got Playboys in my locker!

Oz: Where Willow goes, so goes my nation.

Buffy: It all looked pretty tame to me.
Joyce: Well, I suppose by your standards it could seem pretty... Oh dear.
Buffy: What?
Joyce: I left my bra in his car.
Buffy: Mother!
Joyce: I'm joking.
Buffy: Good god, that's horrible. Don't do that.
Joyce: I left it in the restaurant.
Buffy: No more! No more! No more!
Joyce: On the dessert cart!
Buffy: I can't hear you!

Just a few examples of the fun dialogue that happens on the show and it's actually not even some of the best. But it is just a few of the bits of dialogue that stick with me and continue to make me grin or smile whenever I see the episodes.

The Writing

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I know, you're probably wondering what the heck I'm talking about because didn't I just talk about the writing when I talked about the dialogue? Well, partly. But one of the things that I love about this show is the way that it's not afraid to do things differently or take risks. Take the episode from season four, Hush. More than half of that episode has absolutely no dialogue. We're forced to rely on the characters' expressions and body language to follow the story, just like the characters are finally forced to find other ways to communicate (which is good since talking was pretty much a fail for everyone during this episode). Or in the episode The Body from season five. That episode has absolutely no music and it makes the episode that much more emotional.

It's one of the fun things about this show. Just when you think you've got it figured out, when you think that there's only one way that this can go, the writers do something that completely throws you off balance and changes the way that you expected everything to go. The writing lets you look at the storylines and take what you want from them - you want to see a metaphor for life somewhere in there? Awesome, you can. If you want to just watch and take it all at face value? Go for it. And all of that's just for the plot. The relationships on the show are so well done and it's so fun to watch all of them grow over time and develop. The friendships between these characters are put through the wringer and they still survive. As for the romance? Well, without giving away any specific pairings, let's just say that there's something for everybody.

The Way It Sticks With You

As I said before, it's been nine years since this show ended. And yet I can still rattle off quotes, plots, and trivia about this show. The characters, the plot, and everything else about this show is something that people get attached to. Fandom is still going pretty strong for Buffy if the number of fics and various other things (such as fan art and challenges) are anything to go by.

And if you're involved in fandom at all, let me just add that you can cross this show with pretty much anything. I've seen crossovers with books and TV shows, movies and comics. It's just another fun way to explore the show and get to know the characters, maybe this time from a different point of view.

This is actually another reason that I think you should watch: fandom. I've made some of the best friends I'll have because of this show - both in real life and online. Oh, sure, there can be drama. What fandom doesn't have some sort of drama after all? But I also think that the fandom has some of the nicest people that you'll get to meet. And, hey, I've managed to avoid the drama even while getting to know people in fandom so it's possible.

Recs

If anyone's interested in seeing just how possible the different crossovers are, then I suggest going to Twisting the Hellmouth. It's got both fic and art there.

And some videos that are always fun to watch: (Spoilers in the videos!)

I approve this all so whole-heartedly! EVERYTHING ABOUT IT EVER. I'm re-watching Buffy AND Angel with my roomie. We're still on the first season of Buffy and I'm already just in total "GUH I LOVE THIS SHOW"-mode.

Hee, thanks! I just love this show so I want like everyone to watch it and end up loving it. (OMG, Mark Watches. It's fantastic to see him going episode by episode and getting attached to the characters.)

Have you guys finished your marathon or are you taking your time? :)

We're taking our time. We don't really have a choice, as homework and her being hellbent on sleeping in her boyfriend's room every night sort of mean we don't have a lot of outside-class time together lately. -.-

Yay Buffy! I agree with all your reasons, but especially Spike. I've run across very few characters on TV with an arc like his. Amazing stuff.

I've been getting month old notifications today so this is way late but thank you! And yes, I love Spike's arc and it was so hard not to talk about it in here and go into detail on why I loved it so much, lol.

I've also always liked:

Spike: It's a big rock. Can't wait to tell my friends. They don't have a rock this big.

and

Buffy: What are you doing here, Spike? Five words or less.
Spike: Out. For. A. Walk...... Bitch.

(Stupid notifications, I'm just finding these comments on this post!)

BtVS will NEVER die! Although there are still people who have never even heard of BtVS in any of it's incarnations.

Yeah, just getting month old notifications today so I'm way late on this reply but , wow, really? Never even heard of it? I've heard of people who haven't watched it but I don't think I've ever met someone who never heard of it!

I went to a b-day party last month (met some HP fandom friends) and was asked how I got into fandom/fanfic. I said Buffy and a few people at the table said whuh? And were still clueless when I said BtVS.
